Shares rise for McAfee on HP takeover buzz

Shares rose sharply today, Monday 26th April, for McAfee Inc. following rumours that the PC manufacturer Hewlett-Packard showed interest in buying the security software company outright.

Buying McAfee will greatly toughen the company’s authority and expand their competitive edge.

There is now a feeling that they will now have the edge on rivals such as Cisco Systems Inc if the sale of McAfee goes through.

By midday today, McAfee’s shares had risen by 3% to approaching $42 a share.

At present, McAfee and HP declined any comment.

Other manufacturers such as Dell and HP have the iPad in its focus also, as Dell appears to be introducing 5, 7 and 10 inch mini slates.

This year 2010 looks as though it maybe a massive year for the slate or tablet.

Lenovo looking to buy Palm

The worlds fourth largest PC brand Lenovo is in the frontline to purchase ailing smartphone manufacturer Palm.

With this news, shares in Lenovo rose by nearly 6 percent to take them to a near 2 year high.

Other potential buyers include the smartphone manufacturer HTC and Huawei, the wireless telecom equipment maker. Both firms have since pulled out and withdrawn their bids.

The Chief Executive of Lenovo decided not to comment on the takeover of Palm earlier this week.

Experts agree that Lenovo, who are doing well at present, are the best candidate to buy Palm, as the Lenovo strategy is increasing their growth through purchases and moving into the “wireless” arena.

Lenovo had a staggering $2.4 billion in raw cash at the end of last year 2009. It said that they are also looking at possible amalgamation prospects.

Adobe ditches iPhone code tools

Adobe has announced that it is to scrap its software tools that allow Apple’s iPad and iPhone to use Adobe’s Flash technology.

It is somewhat of a u-turn from Adobe as they had previously announced help to get Flash working on the popular Apple gadgets.

The Flash software is a popular application on the internet for many multimedia components. However, Apple does not support the software and has openly criticized it in the past.

Adobe now seem to be closely associated with Android and Google.

Apple restructured its terms and conditions for the licence software developers have to sign up to implement applications on the iPad and iPhone.

This came just prior to Adobe releasing software Creative Suite 5 that included translations tools that turn Flash code into programs that can work on the iPhone.

This in turn banned the use of code translators including Creative Suite 5. Many software creators have since criticized this move by Apple.

Windows 7 raises Microsoft profits by 35%

Microsoft have announced that its profits had risen by 35% over the first quarter of 2010 and is due to the popular Windows 7 operating system.

Window 7 has made Microsoft a profit of nearly $4 billion or £2.6 billion and has seen good growth from its Bing search engine and also Xbox live.

Microsoft’s sales have risen by nearly 6% compared with the same quarter this time last year and have hit over $14 billion.

The Windows 7 operating system has been Microsoft’s biggest seller and comes after the disappointing sales of Windows Vista.

Microsoft has been the first software company to report on their current earnings.

Apple and Yahoo earlier this week both announced that profits this had risen.

Windows users hit by new McAfee security update

Many PC's around the world, running into the many thousands, have been hit by a new security update issued by Windows.

They have been hit by the update which issued a part of the Windows platform as a virus.

The security update, which was provided by the software company McAfee, caused many PC’s to continually restart.

Since the update was issued, McAfee have apologised to all of the people affected.

The problem started when the McAfee software updated its anti virus list which is used to detect programs deemed as malevolent.

The McAfee update incorrectly targeted the Windows file schist.exe file as the wecorl file, which is a virus. The worm then tries to restore the current svchost file and take over the computer.

The virus is then quarantined which caused many PC’s to crash.

The McAfee software update is said to have caused widespread problems, nearly taking Intel down completely at one point.

However, the update has since been removed by McAfee and they have reissued the update without the fault.

iPhone application downloaded nearly 1,000,000 times in 24 hours

Opera, the web browser maker, has reached the top of the iPhone application download chart nearly one day after debuting its own free browser application.

The application has been downloaded by users over a staggering 1 million times after its debut on April 14, 2010.

Apple took nearly 3 weeks to finally agree to program and now the Opera web browser war has been developed for other mobile hardware.

However the Opera mini browser is certainly not the first alternative to the Apple Safari Web browser.

In May 2009, a German developer released at iPhone browser named iCab.

At the moment, there is no Internet Explorer or Firefox application and there is likely not to be any time in the near future because of the development environment for the iPhone.

However the Opera web browser was not initially developed for the iPad, but the program will work on the iPhone.

Over the coming years, it is expected that the mobile marketplace is expected to grow significantly. Advertising is big business on mobile devices. This trend is likely to continue a long time to come.

Microsoft introduces new fix it software

Microsoft has introduced a new “fix it” software program that robotically watches any PC and fixes any common fault.

The new software program is available to Windows XP user and those who use Vista.

It basically is the automatic diagnostic system from Windows 7 and can now be added to older systems.

The fix it program also tries to predict if updates will cause a system to crash.

When the software is installed, it frequently checks the system to see if it has fallen to any bugs. Then, when updates are available, it will inform the system user about the updates and tries to relate them.

The software program can fix about 300 known problems that affect Windows users.

If you sign up for the software, it may be applied to different machines that a user may have.

Windows XP users must have the Service Pack 3 on their operating system installed.

The software can be downloaded from the Microsoft support page. The service first began in 2008.

Leap for video game sales in March

In the United States, video game sales rose by an average of nearly 6% in March. This is somewhat of a comeback for the video game as the 2 previous months saw a slip in sales.

As for hardware sales, they went down 4%, but software sales increased on average by 10%.

The highest selling console of the month was the Nintendo Wii with nearly 560,000 units. The Xbox 360 came in second with nearly 340,000 units sold. And finally in third came the PlayStation 3 with nearly 315,000 units.

As for the highest selling video game, that was God of War III by Sony.

Intel Atom chips can run Android

The new Intel Atom chip can run Google’s Android operating system.

The new Intel Atom chips are low powered and were designed with portable devices in mind such as netbooks.

Intel’s move is seen as considerable as until now the Android system was primarily found on mobile phones.

This is likely to see Google push forward with their own tablet to rival Apple’s iPad.

The news was released by Intel at a conference in China.

It is hoped that the new tablets are picked up by people in the future, as they are smaller than a laptop, but bigger than smartphones.

If the new Intel Atom chip is a hit, then Google can expand beyond there current smartphones.

Intel would also benefit as it could mean that it would expand its chips ahead of merely running Windows.

This year, 2010, will also see initial smartphones that would use the Intel Atom chip.

How to make the Google Tablet competitive

Google has said that it will be putting into production a “Google Pad” and rival the Apple iPad. However, what needs to be done to tackle the Apple iPad head on.

Some issues that Google need to address are software availability, screen size and synchronization.

1. If Google produce the “Google Pad”, the screen size needs to be from 5 to 8 inches. Much larger and it could be deemed too heavy.

2. The Google Pad will be Android powered, like many of the Apple iPad competitors, but these have many limitations which include access to the Android Market software. Google would need to slightly nip an update all function.

3. To help boost productivity, Google needs to include its Google Docs software.

4. Seek out third party developers to create a more persuasive expansion environment.

How this will work is being able to remove something from a photo and then Photoshop fills in the space with a corresponding automatic backdrop.

Marooned Norway PM runs nation on iPad

Norway’s PM Jens Stoltenberg was seen using an Apple iPad after been stranded in New York due to volcanic ash closing down most of Europe’s airports.

He said he used his iPad and run Norway remotely from it. He commented that he used an iPad and thought that they were excellent and a good means of communication.

He went to the USA to participate in a nuclear summit.

Likewise with many other people who have been grounded by the volcanic ash cloud, people were looking for a way to call home.

He got back to Spain and finished his journey overland.

The incident has given Apple a massive amount of free advertising.

XP owners infected with rootkit virus

A number of the newest Windows XP security updates will not update and be installed on machines with a rootkit virus.

A rootkit virus hides within the Windows OS and tries to avoid being found.

The problem came to light in February, as security updates issued caused machines that had been infected with the rootkit to continually crash the system.

This rootkit was identified as Alureon. It can pluck out usernames, passwords, credit card details etc from a system and send the details to the hacker. It can also leave a backdoor open and allow the hacker access to the system.

New updates from Microsoft can now spot if a system has been overtaken by the Alureon rootkit and stop the update installation. The updates also remedy problems in the kernel or core of the operating system, which is where the rootkit is found.

Microsoft is hoping that this will give owners confidence and continue to install updates. The fear is that some owners may stop updating, due to a fear of making their system crash.

It is not yet clear how many owners have been affected.

Sales rise for the PC by a quarter at start of 2010

Initial statistics for the sales of PC’s have rocketed for the first quarter of 2010.

Compared to the same quarter of 2009, the PC manufacturers have sold just over 24% more units.

The figures come on the back of an all time low retail price for the PC. Retail prices have slipped, due to consumers preferring netbooks and laptops.

The big winners so far at the start of 2010 are Lenovo (increase of 58%) and Acer (increase of 42%).

Lenovo had the second biggest number of sales worldwide, whilst Acer came in fourth.

It is expected that sales for April to June will also rise. All of the main PC makers have seen increases in worldwide sales for the start of 2010.

However, Hewlett-Packard is still a fair way ahead of the competition. In third place is Dell and in fifth came Toshiba.

Four new laptops launched by Acer

The computer manufacturer Acer has unveiled 4 new laptops.

The top end machine was the Acer Timeline X model. It has varying size screens from the 13.3 inch up to the 15.6 inch. Acer also revealed that an 11 inch version will be eventually released.

The Acer Timeline X will have 9 different configurations, with prices starting around £600.

Acer are eager to rid itself of being the low end bargain choice for customers. With this in mind, the Acer Timeline X looks really good with a chic keyboard and a blush mounted touchpad.

As for specifications, the cheapest version has an Intel i3 330M processor installed. The high end model has an Intel Core i7 670M.

The hard drives will vary from 250GB to an impressive 640GB. All model versions will have a minimum of 3GB of RAM.

As for graphics, AMD’s HD 5650 and HD 5470 are installed.

Also unveiled by Acer, 2 other mid range laptops were announced. These are aimed at laid-back gamers and people who wish for a Blu-Ray drive.

One of the models, the x754, boasts a complete range of Intel Mobile Core processors and are completed with graphics from AMD. There are3 versions available, the 14 inch, 15.6 inch and finally the 17.3 inch. All 3 have Dolby Optimised surround sound..

The largest model, the 17.3 inch, has DDR3 RAM slots for up to 16GB of memory.

As with the Acer Timeline X, the x751 and the x754 have starting prices of around £600.

Rounding out the new Acer releases is the Aspire Ethos 5943g 02Acer. The laptop sports an 18 inch screen. Whilst being a dominant machine, the look of the machine leaves a bit to be desired.

Whilst the Ethos looks to be the worst of the bunch, the Acer Timeline X, x751 and x754 offer good performance and should be good sellers for Acer this summer.

Apple delays its international release of the iPad

Apple has announced that it will be delaying its release of the iPad to its international consumers. The delay is expected to be around one month.

The worldwide release date has now been set back to 10th May 2010.

The reasoning for the delay, Apple says, was the overwhelming demand for the iPad in the USA. The company claim that they sold nearly 500,000 iPads in its first week of release.

As far as the United Kingdom goes, the companies O2, orange and Vodafone are hastily preparing price plans for the iPad.

In the United States, many users have complained that they cannot connect. Apple then put out a fix for the problem.

News of the delay is thought not to work in Apples favour. The delay may give other manufacturers a lead in with their own product.

New security features announced for Facebook

Facebook, the social networking website, have unveiled new security features that will appear on its website. The features include a new way of reporting abuse on the site and a police 24 hour hotline.

The move comes after a raft of pressure put on Facebook to increase its security for younger online users. An education campaign will also be launched.

However, the site has stopped short of putting a logo link on its pages that would link to a child protection centre.

In return, Facebook is calling on the government of the UK to devise a strategic sharing of data with similar social networking sites. This is already the norm in the United States.

The moves have been put upon Facebook following a man posed as a young man on Facebook and lured a teenage girl to her death.

Facebook has a staggering 23 million users in the United Kingdom alone and will also be putting ads on its site for the NSPCC among others.

Opera can now use own applications on Apple iPhone

The Opera browser boasts faster web browsing by compressing information ahead of it appearing on any mobile device. The browser is expected to be available on the iPod and iPhone anytime now.

This news is very good for the Norwegian owned Opera. Revenue for the firm will undoubtedly rise on this news. They have had a bad 2009 with a big fall in their profits. The Opera browser is already being enjoyed on other mobile devices, such as the BlackBerry.

The deal between Apple and Opera came about after many months of negotiations between the two parties.

However, the competition on the iPhone will be hard for Opera, as it competes with Apples own Safari browser.

Plans for advertising on Twitter

It has been revealed that the social networking site Twitter is to allow advertising on their site for the first time. The way it will work is advertisers will be able to purchase new Promoted Tweets. In the past, the site has been slow or reluctant to allow advertising.

However, the advertisers must construct Tweets or Tweet messages and have a constructive impact on the twitter site. It will not be a traditional advertising campaign.

Some of the advertisers already on board include Starbucks and Sony.

Promoted Tweets have been described as Tweets that are regular but where the advertiser would want to appeal to a much bigger group of Twitter users.

As of now, the networking site has yet to make any profit, but that looks certain to change with the advent of Promoted Tweets for advertisers.

Recently, Twitter has announced that it will be purchasing the company Atebits.
